The history of the 911 is one of constant evolution. Turbo technology developed on the race track, an all-wheel-drive system inherited from a supercar, and the air-cooled engine that shaped the 911's identity for 35 years: this space explores the major technological turning points on the way to the 911 as we know it today.

Turbo: From the race track to the road

Introduced in 1974, the 911 Turbo was Porsche's first application of turbocharging expertise gained in motorsport to a production sports car. A turbocharger uses energy from exhaust gases to supply more air to the engine and generate more power. Although this technology was mainly associated with racing cars at the time, Porsche brought it to a sports car that could be enjoyed every day. Turbo subsequently became more than a technology: it became a name that represents Porsche. The 911 SC (Super Carrera), introduced in 1978 to replace the existing 911 and Carrera models, became a central model of the G-Series era. In 1983, the 911 SC Cabriolet opened another chapter as the first fully open-top model in 911 history.

All-Wheel Drive: 959에서 911로All-Wheel Drive: From the 959 to the 911

Unveiled in 1989, the 964 Carrera 4 was the first production 911 equipped with all-wheel drive. The technology originated in the Porsche 959 supercar. Porsche developed all-wheel drive to deliver the 911's performance reliably across different road conditions, then brought it into a production sports car. The roots of the 911 all-wheel-drive system used in today's Carrera 4 and Turbo models can be traced here. The 959 can be seen in person in the Raceborn area at Porsche Vibe Seoul.

Air-Cooled: The heart of the 911 for 35 years

From the first 911 in 1963 until 1998, the 911 used an air-cooled engine without liquid coolant. Its engineering characteristics, distinctive sound and driving sensations became part of the 911's identity. Technological progress and environmental regulations eventually led to water-cooled engines, but the 993 is regarded as the last 911 to bring air-cooled technology to its most advanced stage. This is why so many enthusiasts continue to hold the 993 in special regard. The 993 Turbo S, in particular, is one of the final high-performance models to represent the air-cooled era. Only 435 were produced, combining an air-cooled flat-six engine, twin-turbo technology and exclusive details to become the most powerful model in the 993 generation at the time.
